Default Side Enscribed & P-Code HK Sightings...

This offering is a bit problematic. Even though the sales write up includes this statement :

" ...Original "Heinrich Krieghoff/Waffenfabrik/Suhl" marking on left frame. "

    http://www.simpsonltd.com/product_in...f37d32ade93e50

Here is a close up on the one for sale versus examples of other side-panel enscribed pistols.

Take a look at the samples in the Gibson book, too.

Here is another, similar to the Simpson offering, but coming up on the RIA 12-2015 auction.

    SN-2397o

Same problem with the side-panel enscription work :

I don't think much of the inscription on the one from Julia either.
What do the HK collectors think of it?

    Mike,

Is this the one you question ? SN-17232 ? (First photo, below.)

    http://jamesdjulia.com/item/3094-358/

I think there are the engraved-HK's and then the side-panel enscribed HK's...usually a different breed with different enscription patterns.

PIA has a couple of engraved-HK's on their site in their HK section. If I recall, one was being sold for Tom Armstrong's family. I am pretty sure that one was SN-1304. (Second photo, below.)

(Yep...it was Tom's...here is his posting when it became his in 2008 : http://luger.gunboards.com/showthrea...t=Presentation )

And then to confuse the issue between the two even more, you have an engraved-presentation Luger showing up with the enscription-style of the side-enscribed Lugers...characteristics of both varieties. Such as SN-25190. (Third photo, below.)

No, I was referring to the second photo in your array in your original post. This one.

    Hi Mike,

No...what worried me about that one (from the Julia auction ) is how the bottom-loop of the capital "S" opens up at the bottom of the letter.

You do not see that with these other examples.

But the Julia auction one is a much better attempt at getting it right compared to the other enscription in Post # 1 from the Simpson LTD link

To my tired eyes it looks as if the Suhl is not in prober alignment with Waffenfabrik, talking the item at Simpson. The one at Julia action has sever issues.

    Peter,

On the Simpson offering, look at the shape/style of some of the lower case letters like "a" and "g" and others, too.

What is the story behind all these attempts to copy/emulate the name plate? Who was this guy and why would his name be on a gun??
