Default K Date S/42 Code Luger, Data Request

K Date S/42 Code Luger, Data Request Copyright 2007 by Jan C. Still

Purpose of data request: to benefit Forum members and to further research on an upcoming revision of Third Reich Lugers.

In the later months of 1934 Mauser started manufacturing the P08 for the German Military. The manufacture and the date of manufacture were concealed with a S/42 manufacturing code and a K date code to signify the 1934 manufacturing date. An €œS€ (scriptic or gothic) inspection mark was stamped on almost all parts* of the first 8300 Lugers produced. The K date Lugers have a serial range of 1-900a with an estimated production of 10,900. All went to the German Army with the exception of about 300 that went to the Kreigsmarine. Most of the K dates bear a frame indent. These Lugers bear a number of differing markings and mechanical features that are numbered 1-5 below (serial ranges are estimate) :

    1. Initially all the K dates parts were marked with a Scriptic S inspection stamp (Like Imperial Erfurt Lugers). Further along in production a mixture of Scriptic and Gothic S inspection stamps were used, then all gothic S inspection stamps, and finally, the parts inspection stamps were dropped. The use of these S inspection stamps (and KM markings) defines the 5 Subvariations of K date Lugers. Note: There was some lack of consistency in stamping the Scriptic or Gothic S inspection stamps and sometimes the distribution ascribed to a specific serial range is only a best estimate. Also the transition from S inspection stamps on all parts to S inspection stamps on some parts is transitional and not always consistent.
Subvariation 1. All scriptic S. Found in the 1-1700 serial range
Subvariation 2. Scriptic S in S/42 code and mixture of Scriptic S or Gothic S on parts. Found in 1700-4500 serial range.
Subvariation 3. Scriptic S in S/42 code and all Gothic S on parts.4500-8300 serial range. The change between Subvariation 3 and 4 is not abrupt and appears to be somewhat gradual.
Subvariation 4. Gothic S in code and without parts S. Found in 8300-10900 serial range.
Unlike some Luger variations, the K date variations can be determined from a yard away.

    2. Initially the two right receiver acceptance stamps consist of –37 –37, then a B90 takes the place of one of the –37 stamps, and lastly a B90 S91 is used. All bear the early test proof (ETP).
–37 –37 acceptance stamps are found in the serial range1-2750 serial range.
–37 B90 acceptance stamps are found in the serial range 2750-3475 serial range.
B90 S91 acceptance stamps are found in the serial range 3475-900a serial range.

    3. All have a sharp barrel band. Initially the barrel band is short and the sight is at the muzzle, later the barrel band is lengthened and the sight is moved to the rear. The short barrel band and sight at the muzzle is reintroduced at the end of production.
Short barrel band, sight at the muzzle (see figure .): found in the serial range1-1675, a very few found scattered in the 2003-9820 range and found on most of the Lugers in the 9820-900a range.
Long barrel band and sight to the rear is found on almost all Lugers in the 1675-9820 range

    4. Production starts with the top of the rear frame thickened forming what collectors call a hump (Figure .). Later the whole rear frame is thickened (Figure ).
Hump in frame: 1-1850; scattered in 2100-7125 range and 9000-300a.
Thickened rear frame: A few scattered in the 1850-3000 serial range, most in the 3000-900a range.

    5. About 300 K dates scattered in the approximate1709-2439 serial range went to the Kreigsmarine and bear an E/M(3) on the left frame and an 0. Property number on their front strap.

Joop did an outstanding job of collecting K date data. See: K-Date DATA REQUEST 1 2 https://luger.gunboards.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7412July 25, 2007
However, I am more accustomed to the format in the book Third Reich Lugers and have always resisted coding with unrelated numbers and letters. Therefore, I have modified this list accordingly and added some additional data. One reason for this data collection is an on going revision of Third Reich Lugers, the more familiar format will aid that revision. More K date information is necessary to complete the lists above and better understand the various changes that occurred within K date production. More K date serial numbers and data is in collections and I would greatly appreciate any additional information.

I am particularly interested in which K date Lugers display the indents at the front of the receiver (figure above). These indents vary in definition. One long time collector expert reports that about 50% of the observed correct K dates this indent, another says all correct K dates have the indent.

Any acceptance stamps on the bottom of the receiver lug would also be of interest.

K Date Lugers have long been a target of fakers. Some have obvious indicators: remnants of Weimar proofs and unit marks, incorrect placement of S stamps, wrong acceptance stamps, or improper front sight. To make it easier for the buyers of K dates to purchase correct Lugers, it is suggested that a list and detailed description of replica (fake) K dates be made. ( start: 2021, KM 0.1750 Fake Navy; 2295 Fake K date, 4423 Fake K date)

Any corrections, new information, additions, errors, and pointed out mistakes would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jan

    Jan,

I am glad to see that my survey of the K-dates on this forum was helpful for you to create this new survey in a different setup; based upon the format that you use in Third Reich Lugers. I presume that the Copyright that you mention in the header covers this (your) format and not the data.

About the indents that can be found on both sides of the chamber:
All K-dates that I have observed have these. In my collection I have four K-dates (sn's 2003, 4408, 6380 and 858a); all four have this particular property. It seems though that some pistols of the first 1000 serial numbers do not have it. Owners of these Lugers should have a close look and send you their findings.

It seems not very useful and even disturbing for the membership if I continue to gather K-date information in my survey. If another K-date is presented there I will pass the information on to this new thread.

    Joop
I have some experience with copyright laws. When I was about to publish the book Axis Pistols, a registered letter from another author claimed copyright over all German Kreigsmarine and Police Pistols and threatened to force me to defend myself in a Texas Court. I felt I had to hire a lawyer( at $100 hr, in 1985) and I must admit I am still not completely clear as to what a copyright covers. (Fortunately, the claim was misguided and I did publish Axis Pistols.) It is my understanding that a copyright does not cover data (facts) it only covers presentation.

So there is no confusion, I put the data in the approximate format that I will use in the revision of Third Reich Lugers. Also, I want to make it clear to the members that I intend to use the material in an upcoming book, as (in my opinion) it would be disingenuous to mislead them as to my purpose.

I do not think that the members will be disturbed at two locations to post K date data. Such overlap has occurred before on this Forum and I do not think anyone got disturbed. As data is not covered by copyright please feel free to use the data from my table in your table. I will do the same. I strongly suspect that the collectors that already posted data in your table will not post again in my table. However, I would very much like to obtain some additional data from collectors that have not posted or that have access to internet deficient collectiors.

Note: I am not an attorney. If there is someone with better copyright information please feel free to correct my information.

    Hello Jan:

Thanks for the list. I think there is an "error" regarding the information on my K date. My K date is number 2372, but is listed as 2373. The front strap has O.2038 and the magazine is 2067. All the information other than the serial number is correct. I want to do anything I can to ensure the accuracy of the information in the new Third Reich Lugers. I am very much looking forward to seeing it!

    Hi Jan:

Definitely my mistake, the correct serial is 2372. All the other information is correct. Here are a couple of pictures of the piece. Thanks again for all the hard work.

    Jan,

Yesterday I received by mail the data of three more K-Dates.
As you encouraged me to continue my survey too, I have inserted the data of SN's 4372, 4429 and 121a. All have the indents at the front of the chamber.

Thanks for the K Date data. Your note said 4372, 4419, and 121a. Your data table lists 4429 instead of 4419. Which is correct to use?
    Thanks

Sorry Jan, the typo devil struck again... It is definitely 4429. I received pictures; solid information.
