In Jan Still's new book Central Powers it lists production

at 750 to 1500.I believe 750 is more realistic.

Previous estimates in Imperial Lugers had production at 5000.

It's a beautiful DWM 1914 artillery upper(complete) with an unidentifiable DWM lower (short frame). I had the pleasure of looking at this gun at length and I agree with Don that it's probably best left alone unless a "1609" frame/complete gun(DWM) can be found. It really is a great looking upper and one of the few legitimate 1914's that I've seen. When I first saw the gun I immediately went to my inventory list to see if I had a "1609" DWM. No luck. Great piece and thanks for showing!

In an effort to identify the DWM lower, I noticed the underside of the trigger guard has the script "W". One of these appears in the same place on my 1910 DWM. We have had discussions about the meaning of this "W" and, as I recall, couldn't determine what it was. My search skills are poor and I couldn't find a link to our previous talks. Information on the "W" may help date the frame and if I recall correctly they have been reported only on early dated DWM's. Someone may have suggested it meant "Wurttemberg". Can anyone find this link? Thanks!

Tim, the "W" marked Lugers have been discussed here in the past with no conclusion as to its significance. I've had artilleries and P08s so marked.

I bought the 1914 DWM #121 from Mike after meeting with him for the first time earlier this year. He is 81 years old now and letting go of some pieces from his unbeliveable collection. It does indeed have the 3 crowns with a S underneath them on the front right of the receiver. This pistol is near mint with a matching #121 rig. If there are any other pictures that I need to add or questions anyone has, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate.

Hi and welcome.
Sounds like a really nice 1914!

Could you please post the pictures on the server here?
Many members can't or won't go to hosting sites; and eventually the images will disappear and no longer be available as hosting sights go and come and start to charge to see the pictures, or folks let their use lapse.

Bob, one of the posts mentioned Serial number 1339. Not sure where that came from but I do have one of Ralph Shattuck’s old lists, number 188 which most likely October 1980. In that list he advertises a rare 1914 DWM Artillery, Serial 1339.

Of of course there are no pictures to confirm.

Dave,
thanks for posting.
Interesting to note that in 1980, Shattuck valued the 1914 artillery below the value of a 1916 Navy and below a 1908 Navy;
I guess he didn't know how scarce they really are.

Mutiger, Looks like you have the Holy Grail of all LPO8's with all the bells and whistles congrats. I'm sure the forum would like to see closer pics of proof marks, serial numbers of LPO8 inside and out, maker marks, and any unit marks including stock and holster.

I was doing some research on a gun that has been in my family since the 1950’s. It is a 1914 artillery Luger DWM dated 1914 with a serial numberi in the 250’s.( all parts including the mag have the same numbers It is in excellent condition with a little wear in the blueing at the muzzle. It came with a holster dated 1916 and at one time you could see an officers name but because of the date I do not think the holster is original with the gun. From what I can tell this may be a rare Lugar. Any information you can provide would be helpful.

You will get more info and response if you start a new thread on your 1914 Artillery and post lots of good pictures, including the holster.
This thread was just intended to keep track of serial numbers- and the original author/poster is now deceased.

Welcome to the board!

Today I saw DWM, 1914 dated, artillery, #1152 (no letter suffix). It has been rebuilt by Simson. The barrel has been replaced with a 4" barrel and renumbered to match the gun. The rear toggle link has been replaced with a link that has the notched rear sight and is stamped with a Simson E/6 and a large "S". The rear link was also renumbered to match the gun. The receiver also has the notch cut on top above the 1914 date to allow for the original artillery sight to seat properly.

This one surfaced recently. I don't believe it is correct based on the serial number. It is serial numbered 2490, and my best guess at this point is that someone simply replaced the Erfurt toggle with a DWM one. The sideplate is also un-numbered, which would have been a clear indicator of an Erfurt or DWM gun. It appears to have an Erfurt frame (Erfurt stamp and RC stamp on the front triggerguard). The pictures are not clear enought to distinguish the receiver markings, but they don't appear to be crown/S.
