1939 DATED MAUSER MILITARY AND POLICE LUGERS Copyright 2008 By Jan C. Still An update to add new Lugers and to add thumbnails to old posts. Any corrections or additions greatly appreciated.

The change from S/42 to 42 code, from the mid to late test proof, and from the E/63 to E/655 acceptance stamp all occur during 1939. During 1939 Mauser produced approximately 26,300 S/42 code Lugers in the 4100n-3700q serial range and 93,000 42 code Lugers in the 2000q-5000z serial range for the German military. All the S/42 code Lugers are reported with the MTP and all 42 code Lugers are reported with the LTP. The S/42 code Lugers bear the SE63 SE63 acceptance stamps and the 42 code Lugers bear the SE63 SE63, SE63 SE655, and SE655 SE655 acceptance stamps (The SE63 stamps come in three sizes. On close examination some SE63 are actually SE83). All 1939 dated S/42, 42 code and police banner Lugers have the Mauser hump. A few 1939 S/42 Lugers have an added sear safety and were procured by the police.

Some Mauser Banners dated 1939 bear police acceptance stamps of either E/L, E/C, E/K or E/F and were procured by the police.

The 1939 date has more military and police variations than any other date (1934-1942, excluding minor mechanical markings variations found on some earlier dates). Illustrated here in are: S/42 Army and S/42 police (all variations excluding changes in E/63 size); Mauser Banner police E/L (excluding E/C, E/K, E/F; and 42 Code (excluding SE/655 SE/655 and Navy property number). The variety of manufacturing codes, test proofs, acceptance stamps, police stamps or the addition of a sear safety make collecting the1939 dated military and police Lugers challenging and interesting. Addition of the missing Variations to this partial listing would be most appreciated. They and their photographs can be posted in this thread or linked to it. Also, post or link any photographs of 1939 dated Mauser Army or Police Lugers.

Jan, while in no where as nice of condition as the other pistols pictured in this thread, here are pictures of my serial 5448w transitional 1939 luger whose serial number you have already logged. All matching, except for the magazines, with just a little honest wear on it. Also, pictured is its 1939 dated holster with a very unusual acceptance mark. It sorta looks like a Hr - 6.

Regards,

Bob Law

Here is mine

I would like to know an easy way to read these marks? what could I use for white to show up in the marks?
Oh yea, I knew better but did it anyway I pulled the pin on at trigger guard left side and the thing came apart. The side plate and pin are now back in but the weapon is very loose, like spring is missing or not right?
If you can help, I promise never to do this again.
Thanks Kurt

Tom,
Thank you for your kind remark. I had been looking for a nice Luger for quite a while, this one walked into the shop I work at. From an estate, the son didn't know or care about firearms, was his father's bring back from France. I asked if he would come back with information on his dad, unit, division, etc., I was hoping for some paperwork but nothing has materialized yet. A shame since this could immortalize his dad in a way.

Hello Jan, I just joined the forum, I found your post while trying to find out information on a newly acquired 1939 S 42 sear safety Luger. Your post was very informative and helpfull. I'm still trying to find out my pistols value. It's in about 96% condition all matching including magazine. The Luger came in an original 1940 dated holster with loading tool and spare black bottomed magazine

I just joined today, as a newbie to Lugers and have learned a lot in a few minutes. I now understand the difference between a police and army Luger. The added photos make this forum top notch. Just seeing the photo of the police holster has help me learn the differance between the army and police style holsters. Looking forward to learning more about the Lugers, holsters, etc....
A wealth information. Thanks, Jan

Question:
I am looking at a 1939 S/42, s/n 9xx, letter "O" for possible purchase.
It has a lanyard ring on back upper grip. Was there a timeframe when Mauser attached or removed these lanyard rings to their Lugers?

Thank You,

Mike N.

1939 Mauser (42 code) matching P.08 Luger

I'm late getting to the game, but acquired this piece at the SAR show here in Phoenix last December.

There's some sort of wear damage to the left front of the trigger guard, it almost looks like the pistol was repeatedly drawn from a holster and hit a buckle or something metal causing this specific issue.
