Military issue 1911 .22 conversion kit?

A friends father, who is in his 80's, a retired Army Colonel. Has his issue 1911 with the Military issue .22 conversion kit. He hasn't assembled it in over 30 years.

He called my friend (his son) last night asking about a rod that is in the kit. He vaguely described it as 2-1/2" to 3" long , and roughly 1/4" in diameter? (I'm getting this second hand). He has forgotten what it is for. He speculated that it might be an Extractor. I can't imagine an extractor would be this long.

I'm not all that familiar with these kits, so thought I would seek some assistance.

The gentleman lives 1000+ miles away, so this is all by guess and by gosh.

Does anyone have a WAG as to what it could, or might be??

Thanks...

Here is a picture of a complete Colt45/22 Conversion unit. I can also get the one I have for a Series 70 out if necessary.
