boater4life.. Welcome to the Forum. Is your gun a BYF 42 or a 42 code ? I am doing a study on black grips and I would appreciate it if you would check out the attached link and let me know what you have.....

    Thanks.......

taudelt, Thanks for the welcome. My Luger has a 42 stamped on the receiver. On the toggle plate is stamped byf. The grips are type 4. Is there anything that you can tell me about this "GI bring back" weapon? Thanks.

boater4life... Thanks for the data..... I have updated the list to include yours.

In Jan Still's THIRD REICH LUGERS there is a table showing production figures for Mauser military lugers. They produced about 113,000 guns and the serial number range is approximately 500(without a suffix) to about 149m. Your gun was relatively early. 1942 was the last year for military production of lugers by Mauser.

The Army inspected for both the Army and Luftwaffe so you gun could have been issured to either. If you do some looking around the Forum you will find some updated figures regarding production and serial number ranges but the above should give you a basic idea. I believe Jan is in the process of updating and hopefully there will be a new book out soon.

The black grips and black bottom mag would make it a so called "Black Widow". This is a marketing term started by a dealer many years ago but it has stuck.......

I would suggest you use the search function to find all kinds of good stuff......
